Her Story –
Aditi Wardhan Singh is no stranger to the struggle one feels in trying to figure out where you are and where you are from. For the longest time she thought she was the “Girl from no where.”
Childhood in Kuwait, graduation from India, coming to USA with her husband and two kids later Aditi constantly felt like she belonged no where. It is hard to find a tribe when you do not belong to any single language nor do you identify with a specific citizenship and thus mindset. Still, asking her where she has loved living the most is akin to asking her which of her children she loves most.
Her love for India stems from her rich heritage. The festivals and the cultural diversity within India taught her many a life lessons. Yet, she never “fit into” a particular state’s culture/language which excluded her from enjoying the community that many Indians so naturally benefit from.
Her love for Kuwait comes from the happy childhood, facilities, education, above all the many life long friendships she enjoys. Even though she can never be a citizen or have equal rights/respect as one.
USA is where her marriage began. Richmond is where her two children came into this world. It is her home. Her husband and she love the size of the city and the friendly people and the many things to do locally and around. Yet many immigrants like her are not sure of how the atmosphere will be tomorrow.
She is bilingual. English is her first language. Hindi second. But around her most people know three or more languages. Most of her life has been spent stubbornly demanding translations. On the plus side, she understands a fair bit of Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu, some Arabic and most of the swear words in Tamil and Malayalam. After kids being born and being introduced to Dora, she now knows some Spanish too.
Coming from a Hindu, Rajput family she celebrates Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Lohri and Onam with equal aplomb as Diwali, Holi, Janmashtami, Rakhi. She takes life lessons from as many cultures/religions as she can and tries to teach her children the same. As a family she takes immense pride in celebrating every holiday/festival there as they learn more about the world together.
Being a foodie, she loves a barbecue or meatloaf as much as vegetarian Gujarati Thaali.
Raising Her Children
Being a mother made Aditi Wardhan Singh realize how wrong she had been. She wasn’t the “Girl From No Where”. She now realizes that her experiences have been a blessing! She enjoys celebrating varied food, festivals and traditions with her children and sharing her kaleidoscopic memories with them. She finds it paramount to have that fine balance of new age thinking and heritage in this multicultural environment.
She realized we don’t ever have to “belong” to one place. Nor should we. She is not the girl from no where. Because we belong everywhere.
She started writing specifically about the challenges she faced in parenting and the many positive facets within them on her blog Silver Linings. She soon grew as from a blogger to freelance writer for Huffpost, Thrive Global and other publications.
Always aspiring to become a novelist she began working on her dream book but soon, she realized when talking about culture, her voice alone is not enough!
With the number of people living in a multi cultural environment; there is need now more than ever to create cultural awareness.
She wrote an article for Richmond Moms Blog which got her thinking! Cultures change every two hours of travel. The food, the air, the places to see, the thinking. Even if you visit a place, you cannot possibly know the real life of the people there. We cannot all possibly see it all but we can read or share it with others out there who desire to learn more.
She is bringing voices from around the world together to provide open minded parents with tools to empower their children to grow to be positive, gracious, global thought leaders!
We are after all one world raising world children !
