Each short tale gives you a glimpse into the life of a different woman and how their culture and American status have shaped the way that they are in every type of relationship. Some stories are happy while others are sorrowful, but each has its roots deep in an Indian American upbringing.
I really enjoyed this collection of stories. There were so many different tales and each one was unique in its own way, which I found enjoyable because I didn’t feel like I was reading a recycled plot or storyline. I also liked the subtle way that the stories introduced me to Indian culture and how this differs from my own living as a Caucasian in the United States. Each character is so well thought out for being such a small part of a larger collection. I’ve come across story collections and whole novels where the characters weren’t fleshed out or only partially.
I feel like Singh took her time with each story and the characters that were involved. Because of this and the fact that no two tales are alike, Within is a collection that I very much loved reading. Some of my favorites are Grievances, Innocence, Disgust, and Peace. I love the names of each of the stories. It really sets the tone and allows the reader to know what to expect from that particular story. Overall, I think Aditi Wardhan Singh has done a wonderful job with this collection. I love these stories! They are wonderfully written. And I love that they deal with issues I’m sure so many people are facing but are not well represented. They are such beautiful sketches of life today, as people juggle multiple identities and being “in between” old and new, one identity and another (or more).
